THE LEGEND OF
THE LEGEND OF
An ancient heroine for modern times.
La Befana and Friends are on a mission to create a global neighborhood one magical encounter (and cookie!) at a time. Whether on the street or in her magic kitchen, this jovial Italian grandmother figure embraces everyone, from those in the mainstream to those in the margins and she is here to show the world that LOVE is the magic that unites us all.
Kate West is a multimedia storyteller whose passion it is to illuminate the triumphant nature of the heart. She became enchanted by La Befana one Christmas day while baking La Befana stars, remembering the love that she felt as a child when her family would gather around the table with friends and neighbors alike, celebrating each others differences as if they were family. She has made it her mission to bring the magic of La Befana to kids of all ages, all over the world.
She is the author of La Befana and the Star which was written around the kitchen table illustrated by her dad. She is excited about extending this kitchen table to the rest of the world through joining forces with Dina.
Dina Gregory is a former classroom teacher turned author, Tedx speaker, reluctant puppeteer, and community catalyst. She helps people of all ages to think like planetary citizens, appreciate cultures, exhibit the joys of being a lifelong learner and brings laughter and delight to the growing pains associated with personal and social transformation.
After meeting Kate, she became enchanted by the power and simplicity of La Befana’s legend and the opportunity it has given her to connect more deeply with her ancestral roots. As an Italian-American, who has fond memories of sitting around the kitchen table sharing stories and songs, Dina felt called to not only work to preserve this cultural legend but to bring forth a new cultural story--one that is inclusive of all.
According to ancient Italian folklore, La Befana was a simple woman whose life completely changed when one evening the three biblical Magi knocked on her door to ask for directions to Bethlehem.
Though she didn't know the directions, she invited them in, and fed them a feast. They told her they were following the bright star to bring gifts to the long awaited Holy Child. After an evening of talking over food the magi then invited her to join them on their journey, but she declined stating she was too busy with her housework.
Soon enough she realized her mistake and with her broom still in hand ran after the Magi with gifts for the child. But she was too late, the Magi were gone and she was left with a deep regret.
As legend goes on the eve of January 6th, La Befana flies from house to house in a perpetual search for the holy child, leaving goodies behind for the children (and if you’ve been naughty sometimes even coal).
Kate's book La Befana and the Star recounts this ancient legend and adds a modern culinary twist!
These rebel girls are on a mission to show the world that our stories are interwoven, ever unfolding, and absolutely and utterly divine!
Kate, La Befana, and Dina
There is an ancient Japanese tale of a red string. According to this myth, everyone's pinky finger is tied to an invisible red string that will lead him or her to another person with whom they will make history (in Kate and Dina’s case herstory).
After a serendipitous meeting at a friend’s 4th of July party in 2018 it would seem that in spite of being on opposite ends of the coast Dina and Kate were in fact connected by a string of fate. When they met both were working on separate projects. Dina, a Magic Bus and Kate, a Magic Kitchen. Both being places where people from all walks of life would come together and eat, dance, laugh and celebrate the many cultures of our world.
Each frustrated by dreams that seemed too big to complete on their own, they decided to join forces and let La Befana guide their way! Since letting go of their individual plans to focus on a shared mission, their lives have become magical than they could have ever envisioned.
Enchanted by the legend of La Befana, Kate and Dina have committed to living their own legends with child-like imagination and defiant joy.
