Why Now?

Meet La Befana
She’s an old crone from ancient Italian folklore whose legend is interwoven with that of the three biblical Magi and she is here to teach the world about good old fashioned caritas (love of humankind). For La Befana, life is about magic, but not just any old magic, it’s that special kind of magic that occurs in the everyday moments of our lives when we connect to one another with open and tender hearts.

Our Mission
La Befana and Friends are on a mission to transform the world one magical encounter (and cookie!) at a time. Whether on the street or in La Befana's magic kitchen, this jovial Italian grandmother figure embraces everyone, from those in the mainstream to those in the margins and she and her friends are here to show the world that LOVE is the magic ingredient that unites us all.

According to ancient Italian folklore, La Befana was a simple woman whose life completely changed when one evening the three biblical Magi knocked on her door to ask for directions to Bethlehem.
Though she didn't know the directions, she invited them in, and fed them a feast. They told her they were following the bright star to bring gifts to the long awaited Holy Child. After an evening of talking over food the magi then invited her to join them on their journey, but she declined stating she was too busy with her housework.
Soon enough she realized her mistake and with her broom still in hand ran after the Magi with gifts for the child. But she was too late, the Magi were gone and she was left with a deep regret.
As legend goes on the eve of January 6th, La Befana flies from house to house in a perpetual search for the holy child, leaving goodies behind for the children (and if you’ve been naughty sometimes even coal).
Kate's book La Befana and the Star recounts this ancient legend and adds a modern culinary twist!
